Jacob, ever the planner, finds himself between a rock and a hard place as he prepares to meet his brother Esau, whom he once tricked out of a birthright and blessing. Fearing the worst, Jacob sends gifts ahead to soften Esau’s heart and divides his camp as a precaution (Genesis 32).

That night, Jacob has a mysterious wrestling match with a divine being and earns a new name: Israel, meaning “he struggles with God.” After wrestling God, Jacob is left with a limp.

The next day, to Jacob's relief, Esau greets him with open arms, showing forgiveness beyond expectation (Genesis 33).

However, the narrative takes a dark turn in Genesis 34, where Dinah, Jacob's daughter, is wronged by Shechem, a local prince. To avenge their sister, Dinah’s brothers Simeon and Levi take justice into their own hands (Genesis 34).

Why do the wicked seem to prosper? Psalm 10 explores that question. David cries out to God, asking Him to see the arrogance and oppression of the wicked. There is hope in trusting in God’s justice. Hold fast to faith through unfairness.
