Chronicles can feel like it jumps around a bit, especially in comparison to the storytelling of Samuel and Kings. When reading Chronicles, look for familiar themes and concepts to keep you grounded.
In 1 Chronicles 11, David is finally made king over all Israel and Israel unites under his leadership. In Chapter 12, we focus on the men who joined David, while he still was fighting Saul. These weren’t just warriors, they were skilled, strategic, and deeply loyal. People that came from different tribes. God sends us the right people at the right time, every time.
In 1 Chronicles 13, David tries to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, but he does not follow God’s instructions. Under David’s leadership, Uzzah, mistakenly touches the Ark and is struck down. The death of Uzzah is a painful reminder that good intentions don’t replace obedience. David is deeply shaken, and he pauses to reflect.
In 1 Chronicles 14, we see David reconnecting to God. This realignment grants him victory. His reputation is established, and we clearly see God is with him.
Glorious, gracious, compassionate. A provider. Powerful and Trustworthy. Reliable and everlasting. All words that describe God in Psalm 111. Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. Amen.
