1 Chronicles 18-20 focus on David’s military victories. In 1 Chronicles 18, David defeats surrounding enemies, including the Philistines, Moabites, and Edomites. His strength comes from the Lord. In 1 Chronicles 19, David shows kindness to the new Ammonite king, but his gesture is misunderstood as a threat. The Ammonites hire Aramean allies, and war breaks out. God steps in and gives David and his army victory. In 1 Chronicles 20, David’s army captures the Ammonite city of Rabbah and defeats more Philistines, including descendants of giants like Goliath. 1 Chronicles 21 changes pace a bit. We see David order a census of Israel’s army to measure its strength. This was not done in obedience but out of pride. This brings a plague upon his people. He pleads for mercy and his prayer is answered. We can all fall into pride; it is how we respond to our mistakes that define our spiritual connection and maturity. Psalm 113 is a beautiful and uplifting hymn of praise that reminds us how great and yet how personal our relationship with God is.
