In 2 Chronicles 21, Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, becomes king of Judah and quickly turns from God. He kills his own brothers to secure power and leads the nation into idol worship. Idol worship is the root, and evil is the fruit. How can we identify idols in our own lives?
In 2 Chronicles 22, Ahaziah, Jehoram’s son, reigns for only one year before being killed. His mother, Athaliah, then seizes power by murdering the royal family, but one baby, Joash, is rescued and hidden. God is behind the scenes preserving Davids’s line.
In 2 Chronicles 23, Seven years later, the priest Jehoiada leads a courageous rebellion. He reveals the hidden boy, Joash, and crowns him king. Athaliah, the boy’s grandmother, is executed, and worship is returned in the Temple.
In 2 Chronicles 24, Joash begins his reign at seven years old. He restores the Temple and following God under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest. After his advisor dies, Joash listens to corrupt advisors and turns to idol worship. Eventually, Joash is assassinated, and his legacy is destroyed. Staying faithful to God is a life-long decision.
Written by David, Psalm 122, this song celebrates the joy of going to worship in Jerusalem and prays for peace in the city. It reminds us how special it is to gather together.
