As we continue, we find Moses on an incredible, messy, and deeply human journey. Moses steps into his divine mission. Spoiler alert: things don’t go as planned.
Moses, like many of us, starts his walk by doubting himself (Exodus 4). “What if they don’t believe me?” “I’m not good with words!” “Send someone else!” But God equips Moses with miraculous signs, and a brother, Aaron, for support. God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called.
Moses and Aaron have their first confrontation with Pharaoh (Exodus 5). It doesn’t go well. The Pharoah reacts by making their workload harder. Moses, overwhelmed and discouraged, asks God, “Why did You even send me?” Just because it’s God’s plan doesn’t mean it’ll be smooth sailing.
God knows that the only way the Pharaoh will understand is through a clear demonstration of His power (Exodus 6). It is a challenge for the Israelites to have faith through their despair. When caught in a moment of desperation we can all find it hard to hear God’s voice. It is faith that steps in the gap to keep our hearts and minds focused on the promises to come.
In Psalm 17, David asks God to listen and protect him from enemies. He knows God sees his heart and will keep him safe.
In Psalm 18, David celebrates how God saved him from danger. God is like a rock, shield, and stronghold. When we feel weak, God’s strength can get us through.
