At the beginning of 1 Corinthians 1–3, Paul is in Ephesus, a busy port city on his third missionary journey around A.D. 54–55. He had already spent about three years there, teaching and helping the new church grow. While in Ephesus, he started hearing reports that the believers in Corinth were struggling with disagreements and pride.
From far away, Paul writes this letter with a mix of love and concern. He deeply cares for the Corinthians and feels both thankful and heartbroken, thankful that they know Jesus but heartbroken that they’re arguing instead of working together. You can almost feel his pastor’s heart in these chapters. He wants them to remember that faith isn’t about fame, power, or who leads better; it’s about building their lives together on Jesus, the one foundation that never cracks.
So while Paul writes from Ephesus surrounded by noise, trade, and different cultures, his heart is focused on restoring peace and unity in a church hundreds of miles away.
In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul reminds the believers that they should be united, not divided. Some were saying they followed Paul, others Apollos, and others Peter. Paul says that what really matters is Jesus and His message of the cross. God’s wisdom often looks different from the world’s wisdom, but His ways bring real peace and purpose.
In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul explains that he didn’t try to impress anyone with fancy words or clever arguments. Instead, he shared about Jesus with humility and the power of the Holy Spirit. He tells them that God’s wisdom is something the world can’t understand on its own. When we listen to God’s Spirit, we begin to see life the way He does. It’s like finding light in a dark room that helps us understand where to step next.
In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul compares believers to a building. He says that Jesus is the foundation, and everyone else builds on that base. Some build with strong materials like faith and love, while others use weak ones like pride and jealousy. Only what’s built on Jesus will last. He also reminds the church that they are God’s temple, a place where His Spirit lives. When we care for one another and let love be the foundation, our lives become a beautiful reflection of God’s work in us.
In Psalm 91, we read about the safety that comes from trusting God. He protects like a shelter during a storm and covers us like a bird guarding its young. No matter what happens, we can rest knowing that God is close, watching over us. It’s a comforting promise that even when life feels uncertain, His presence is our steady peace.
