Chapter 17 sets the tone for kings, ensuring they rely on God rather than wealth, power, or alliances. What would be considered a king nowadays? Are you one? Am I? As our wealth and power grows so does our responsibility to place God at the center of everything.

In Deuteronomy 18, God cautions us to be careful where we look for guidance. When looking for truth, turn to the Bible or prayer for the advice you need.

This chapter introduces cities of refuge (Deuteronomy 19). These were places where someone who killed accidentally could seek safety from revenge. The creation of cities of refuge, shows how God values both justice and mercy.

Going into battle (Deuteronomy 20), Israel was told not to fear because God was with them. We do battle every day in life. Starting our day with a simple aphorism – God is with me. – can be just enough to get us over any hump.

In Psalm 59, David cries out to God for His protection. Saul’s men were after him at every turn. David knows that his challenge against Saul is colossal, but God is limitless. When we are feeling overwhelmed by our trials, we too can find refuge in knowing God is greater than any test we face.
