In 1 Samuel 18, David rises in favor after defeating Goliath, and Saul becomes increasingly jealous. While others celebrate David, Saul begins to fear him, seeing his success as a threat. At the same time, Jonathan, Saul’s son, forms a deep and loyal friendship with David.
Saul’s jealousy turns deadly, and he tries to kill David multiple times (1 Samuel 19). God saves David in creative ways. He uses Saul’s children, Michal and Jonthan. He also intervenes directly. When we walk in God’s purpose, He surrounds us with the right people and even uses surprising means to support us.
As the story develops, in 1 Samuel 20, David and Jonathan test Saul’s intentions. Jonathan is finally convinced that his father truly wants to kill David. It is hard to believe the negative truths about our parents. Jonathan helps David escape and honors their friendship. Not an easy choice.
Asaph was a worship leader that served in King David’s later years or even after his reign. Psalm 83 is a plea to God to act against Israel’s enemies who are plotting together to wipe them out. Israel, going through a national crisis, reaches out in the right direction.
