In 2 Samuel 1, David receives news of Saul and Jonathan’s death. Though Saul pursued him for years, David mourns deeply and honors both. This can happen in our lives too. Although what happens is necessary and part of Gods plan, it can still cause us to mourn profoundly. This reminds us to honor people even when relationships are difficult. Our actions should reflect God’s heart.
In 2 Samuel 2, David is anointed king over Judah, but Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth is made king over Israel. The nation is divided, and tensions rise between the two houses. A civil war brews among God’s people. Division can be heart-breaking. During times of division, we need to be as close to God as possible, putting faith in His perfect timing.
In 2 Samuel 3, David’s house grows stronger while Saul’s house weakens. Meanwhile, conflict arises within Saul’s army, especially between Abner and Ish-Bosheth. Eventually, Abner turns to David, seeking peace. Righteousness will always bring peace.
Psalm 87 is a deep reflection on identity. What defines us? We see that God chooses what humanity overlooks. The unexpected choice is often God’s path. It then moves on to remind us that everyone is welcome in God’s family. No one is too far gone to be redeemed. Our identity must be defined by our relationship with Him. We are citizens of His kingdom. We are His.
