2 Samuel 9 shows King David. He remembers his promise to Jonathan in 1 Samuel 20 14-17. He finds Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, and returns his inheritance and gives him a seat at the King’s table. Remembering those who have been forgotten is living according to God’s will. Just like God does not forget us, we need to make an effort to remember others.

In 2 Samuel 10, After the king of the Ammonites died. His son Hanun became king in his place. David tries to show compassion to this neighboring king’s son, but his messengers are humiliated. What was meant as peace becomes war.

In 2 Samuel 11, David falls into sin. In a moment of weakness, David sees Bathsheba, sleeps with her, and gets her pregnant. To hide the sin, he tries to manipulate her husband. When that did not work, he has him killed. David marries Bathsheba. Sin can cause the ripple effect in our lives. We have no idea the unintended consequences to come. This reminds us to guard our hearts, no one is above failing.

2 Samuel 12, God sends Nathan the prophet, who tells David a parable that exposes his sin. David is crushed. God forgives him, but Bathsheba still loses her baby. Eventually Bathsheba and David have a second son, Salmon, born out of the brokenness. God loves him.

Psalm 89 is a powerful and emotional journey. It goes from wrestling with disappointment to relying on God’s promises. In ends in verse 52: Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen. I say Amen to that!
