In Joshua 5, the Israelites reaffirm their covenant with God by circumcising the new generation born in the wilderness. Just like any relationship, renewing and strengthening its bond can help make sure it’s built to last.
Joshua 6 describes the miraculous victory at Jericho. God commands the Israelites to march around the city for seven days, and on the seventh day, after shouting as God commanded, the walls collapse. The entire city was destroyed, sparing only Rahab and her family because of her faith and protection of the spies in Joshua 2.
After the win at Jericho, Achan stole from the things that had been devoted to God. In Joshua 7, the Israelites face a shocking defeat at Ai due to Achan’s sin. It is often the hidden immorality in our lives that brings about the most consequence. Even though it is hard to face our failings, bringing them into the light will help to avoid unwanted outcomes.
Joshua 8 details Israel’s second attempt at Ai, now under God’s guidance. This time, they follow God’s battle strategy, ambush the city, and claim victory.
Psalm 66 is a song of praise that celebrates God's work. He begins by highlighting God’s evident power throughout history. He moves on explaining how God allows trials to refine His people. He ends the psalm with a personal vow to worship God.
Father, I know you are in control. Your plans form my walk. I will worship You with my obedience forever. Amen.
