In Hebrews 6, we are invited to travel to a deeper level. 6 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity. On this level of newfound depth and maturity we will be able to truly understand a promise from God.
To encourage us on our journey we read: 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Confirming to our soul that the promise is not in question, and through faith and patience it can be achieved.
An oath is a promise made by something greater than oneself. “I swear on my mom not I swear on my hamster”. for example. So, a promise made to you by God is the ultimate promise. Unchangeable, unbreakable. 6 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.
18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We can be sure of this because God cannot lie so we know His promises are true.
19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain. We can use this as an anchor to keep us grounded when we feel like we are losing patience, or faith.
Step 1: Go deeper
Step 2: Rest in Faith and Patience
Step 3: Believe God is unchanging.
Step 4: Anchor yourself to the security you find in God.
Who promised you that? God did.
