The spirit is the part of us that belongs to God. It lives inside the body. The body is the part of God that belongs to us. Throughout our walk in faith, we find the Spirit and the body in conflict. It is impossible to separate the body from the Spirit. Through spiritual formation we find a balance between mind, body and Spirit by building a foundation in Christ.
This journey must be done intentionally. Spiritual formation in Christ is done vision, intention, and method, in that order. (Willard) Knowing what we are a student of and what we are being shaped into it key. It also must be done mindfully. To journey mindfully is to live wholeheartedly in the present moment alert to God. (Calhoun, 2005)
The process is everlasting and requires endurance and faith. The prize of spiritual formation is peace. The type of peace that only a true intimate connection with God can give. 1 Peter 3:11 They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
Spiritual formation is the decided intentionality to turn from evil towards God in a mindful, unending journey towards peace.
