How many people are going to chip in for the pizza? How many kids and how many adults in your reservation? A table, for how many? Everyone wants to know your numbers.

The book of numbers is the fourth book in the Bible. Coming out of training during the book of Leviticus, the Israelites are ready to face the wilderness. Before entering the promised land, God wanted to know His numbers.

While preparing to go out to the wilderness of Paran, God ordered that a census be taken. What were they counting? Able bodied, males, ready for military service. Final count: 603,550. This number did not include the men in the tribe of Levi because those guys were called to priesthood. How many kid menus? Kids and women were not even included in this number!

Although preparing for battle seems like an odd thing for a group following God to be doing, doing it without a plan and clarity would make it impossible. It is hard to visualize what this means to us in our everyday life.

I use the book of numbers to remind myself of my own numbers.: 1 God, 2 kids, 3 jobs, 603,550 problems. All joking aside, knowing my numbers helps me to have the clarity I need to accomplish God’s purpose in my life. That inventory, physical, emotional or spiritual, can prove to be handy when heading into my next battle. Our walk with God is not always the easiest but we can guarantee that if we follow his lead, we will be prepared.
