There was a girl I used to know. We don’t talk much anymore. She lived on a small farm. She didn’t know much about the world and how it worked. She suffered from the unforgiving winters and Lipton chicken noodle on repeat.
She grew up and her anxiety made her an over eater. Carrying the weight of the world in her mid-section, she faced criticism with courage. Don’t let them see you sweat.
She learned a little slower than others, making her have to try harder. Trying hard became the gear she was stuck in, until trying hard hardened her.
She left adolescence and traveled quickly into young adulthood. As a people pleaser, she spent too much time on the wrong people. The right people thought she was fine.
Her time never really seemed like her own until she made a brave choice to create healthy limits. Limits that later saved her life.
She became a mother. Completely untrained, only armed with a good heart, again, she began to try. She never tried so hard, but this time it felt right.
Broken and humbled by the voids left even after so much effort, she looked elsewhere for peace. Having already tried everything the world could offer, she looked within.
Within herself, she found a Spirit she never knew was there. This Spirit was much more powerful, much smarter, much braver, much more capable. Leaning on It to make things happen, she finally rested.
Oh, sweet rest. She never looked back. They tell me she continues to live peacefully in that restful state. Completely devoted to a life without worry.
I don’t know. Like I said, we haven’t stayed in touch.
James 1:2-4 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Enduring suffering is part of everyone’s journey. The only cure is to lean on the Spirit inside.
