We live in a world that yearns to be divided. Don’t sit me with him. Why am I behind her? He must think…This always happens to us. Although injustice is very much alive, it is flourishing in everyone’s world in different ways.
We have different life experiences that shade and shape our perspectives. We can never truly understand how another person feels. Switching from sympathy to empathy is a start but it cannot fill the emptiness of feeling wronged.
What hope is there then? When facing a question that is outside of my scope I revert to the classic: What would Jesus do?
To consider the variety of perspectives and the differences in human experience, we see the gospel story from four different perspectives. Matthew for those of us that have a teacher’s heart. Luke for the timeline aficionados. Mark for those of us looking for a wild, exciting ride coasting on headlines. John for those of us that want to go deeper.
If Jesus knew that His story had to be told from a variety of perspectives to be able reach a large audience, how is it that we expect our unique perspective to be “right”.
There is no bigger mistake than being stubbornly convinced you are right. Oh wait! It might be even worse to be steadfastly convinced that someone else is wrong.
Thanks a million Adam and Eve for that afternoon snack from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Now it is up to us to not fall prey to an illusion.
Kindness is King.
